Torrential rains affected 15 districts and one death was reported in Kandy district, according to the Disaster Management Center (DMC).
DMC deputy director Pradeep Kodippili said yesterday that three houses had been destroyed and 81 others damaged. Thirty-seven families have been accommodated in social assistance centers in Kandy and Kurunegala. The meteorological department said yesterday that showers or thunderstorms would occur across the country after 1:00 p.m. today. Heavy showers greater than 100 mm may occur in parts of the western, Sabaragamuwa, central, northwest and Uva provinces and in the districts of Galle and Matara. Showers can also occur in the northern, eastern and southern provinces during the morning.
The Met Department has urged the public to take precautions to minimize damage from strong winds and temporary localized lightning during thunderstorms.
The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued an early landslide warning of “LEVEL 3” for several areas in Kandy, Kegalle and Kurunegala districts.
The warning was issued for DS division of Ududumbara in Kandy district, DS divisions of Mawathagama and Polgahawela in Kurunegala district and Deraniyagala, Dehiowita, Mawanella, Warakapola, Ruwanwella, Kegalle, Galigamuwa, Yatiyanthota, Aranayake, the DS division of Bulathkohupitiya and the Rambukkana district.
The level three warning (color coded red) is intended to urge people living in the aforementioned risk areas to evacuate to a safe location if the rains continue.
The Irrigation Department yesterday issued minor flood warnings for several low lying areas in the Maha Oya River Basin and Deduru Oya Basin due to rising river waters due to heavy rains. 36 hours, the water levels of the river in the upstream areas increased significantly.
There is a possibility of minor flooding in the lower areas of the river basin, especially in the villages of Marandagolla, Nalla, Diwuldeniya and Welihinda in the areas of Giriulla DS division in the coming hours. The Negombo-Kurunegala road is threatened with flooding near the Giriulla. city.

Residents of these areas and motorists driving in these areas are urged to remain vigilant.
The Irrigation Department also said that, given the rainfall and river water levels observed in areas upstream of the Deduru Oya basin, there is a possibility that minor flooding will occur depending on the rainfall. in future, the spill may need to be increased. There is a possibility of flooding in the lower areas of the Deduru Oya valley located in the D / S divisions of Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa and Rasnayakapura in the next hours up to 24 hours. time.
