Private sector’s contribution to Qatar’s GDP increasing over the years, says Sheikh Khalifa


Mechanisms for increasing the private sector’s contribution to Qatar’s GDP have seen great development and growth over the past few years, said Speaker of the Qatar Chamber, Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim al-Thani.
In an interview with Qatar News Agency (QNA), Sheikh Khalifa said the volume of private sector exports is proof of its contribution to the country’s GDP growth.
Based on certificates of origin issued by the Qatar Chamber in the first 10 months of 2021, private sector exports amounted to QR 23.2 billion, up 88% from the same period in 2020, which amounted to 12.3 billion QR.
Sheikh Khalifa pointed out that the partnership between the public and private sectors, which was strengthened by the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) law enacted two years ago, directly contributes to increasing the private sector‘s contribution to Qatar’s GDP. .
He said that the PPP law is a real partner of the public sector in the development process which the state is witnessing, along with other laws enacted between 2018 and 2019 which have helped to strengthen the role of the private sector, such as the law on non-Qatari ownership and use of real estate and the law on the investment of non-Qatari capital in economic activity.
Regarding the competitive capacities of private sector institutions, Sheikh Khalifa said that the Qatari market is experiencing a great opening and the ability of companies and industrial institutions to be competitive is an issue that requires a lot of effort and perseverance and injects more investments.
He noted in this context the importance of efforts to support the competitiveness of the national product in a way that does not result in monopolistic practices, especially in the presence of the committee for the protection of competition and the prevention of monopolistic practices.
Regarding the most important economic sectors in which the private sector can compete and increase the state’s exports, Sheikh Khalifa pointed out that the private sector was able to prove its presence and achieve great successes in many vital and important sectors and that exports reached many markets around the world. world.
Sheikh Khalifa said that the manufacturing sector is considered one of the flagship sectors of the private sector, especially with the existence of a law aimed at supporting the competitiveness of national products, as well as the service sector, trade and industry, as well as the building and construction sector, with a marked interest in the field of agriculture and food, as part of the State’s desire to strengthen food security.
