Eric Velez-Villar appointed deputy director of the FBI’s private sector office


Director Christopher Wray has appointed Eric Velez-Villar as Deputy Director of the Private Sector Office at FBI Headquarters in Washington. Mr. Velez-Villar, a retired Special Agent, recently worked in the private sector.

The Private Sector Office, under the direction of the FBI Intelligence Branch, strengthens partnerships between the FBI and the private sector.

Mr. Velez-Villar began his career with the FBI as a computer scientist in the San Juan Field Office in Puerto Rico. He became a special agent in 1992 and worked on organized crime and drug cases at the McAllen Resident Agency at the San Antonio Field Office in Texas. He transferred to the San Juan office in 1997 and worked on cases of public corruption and violent crime.

In 2000, Mr. Velez-Villar was promoted to Special Supervisory Agent in the Drug Section of the Criminal Investigation Division at FBI Headquarters. He was assigned to the Drug Enforcement Administration for two years.

In 2002, he transferred to the Santa Ana Resident Agency at the Los Angeles Field Office, where he worked on organized crime cases before being reassigned to oversee the Orange County Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). Mr. Velez-Villar was promoted to Deputy Special Agent in charge of the Los Angeles Counterterrorism Program in 2004, overseeing three regional JTTFs.

Mr. Velez-Villar was promoted to Deputy Director of the Terrorist Screening Center in 2006, then returned to Los Angeles as Special Agent in charge of the Bureau’s Intelligence Division in 2007. In 2009, he was appointed Deputy Director Assistant to the Intelligence Directorate at FBI Headquarters, in charge of the intelligence operations branch.

In 2012, he was promoted to Deputy Director of the Intelligence Directorate and was elevated to the post of Executive Deputy Director of the Intelligence Branch in 2014. He retired in 2016 and was Vice President of Security at the Walt Disney Company. He also created a security consulting company.

Mr. Velez-Villar holds a BA from the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico and an MBA from the University of Southern California.
